Working at the Root – One Part at a Time
Resource Therapy is a trauma-informed, brief psychodynamic approach that recognises we are made up of many different parts of self. These parts—known as Resources—each carry emotions, beliefs, and coping strategies that have developed over time to help us survive, adapt, and function. Resource Therapy was developed by Professor Gordon Emmerson and offers a structured yet deeply compassionate way of working with these inner parts.
Every emotion we experience has meaning and value. Many people come to therapy feeling as though one part of them dominates their inner world—such as an anxious, sad, or stuck part. Resource Therapy gently expands this awareness, helping you recognise that you have many parts within you, each with its own role and purpose. When the right part is supported to guide you at the right time, change becomes more possible and life can feel more balanced and manageable.
Resource Therapy focuses on the parts of self that hold pain, trauma, shame, or unhelpful patterns, while also strengthening the internal resources needed for healing. Together, we build awareness of your emotional parts, explore what they need, and find safe, effective ways to meet those needs. At its heart, this approach is about understanding your inner landscape with curiosity and care, supporting the parts of you that feel stuck, and reconnecting with the strengths and resources you already carry to navigate life with greater clarity and resilience..
